Hawaii Continuing Legal Education Requirements

Reporting Method: Self-Reporting

Compliance Period: Annual

Reporting Process: Attorneys must certify their MCLE compliance through their annual Hawaii State Bar Association registration. Attorneys are responsible for tracking and self-reporting their CLE credits and maintaining supporting documentation. 

Compliance Deadline: December 31. 

Reporting Deadline: January 31. 

Total Credits Required: 3 credit hours annually. 

Specialty Credit Requirements: 1 hour of Ethics or Professional Responsibility every three years (this credit counts toward the annual 3-hour requirement). 

Maximum Online Credits: 3 credit hours. All required CLE credits may be completed through approved online, on-demand, or live webcast courses. 

Carryover Credit: Up to 3 excess CLE credits may be carried forward to the next reporting period. Ethics credits may not be carried forward. 

Record Retention: Attorneys must maintain certificates of completion and supporting CLE documentation for three reporting periods. Certificates are not routinely submitted unless requested during an audit.
