Maine Continuing Legal Education Requirements

Reporting Method: Self-Reporting

Compliance Period: Annual

Reporting Process: Attorneys must certify their MCLE compliance by filing an Annual Report Statement through the Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar's MCLE reporting system. Program sponsors report attendance for qualifying live programs, but attorneys are responsible for certifying compliance. 

Compliance Deadline: December 31

Reporting Deadline: The last business day of February. 

Total Credits Required: 12 credit hours annually. 

Specialty Credit Requirements:
  •  1 live hour of Ethics and Professionalism 
  •  1 live, in-person hour of Recognition and Avoidance of Harassment and Discriminatory Communication or Conduct 
Maximum Online Credits: 5 credit hours may be completed through approved self-study or on-demand courses. At least 7 credit hours must be completed through live programming. 

Carryover Credit: Up to 10 general CLE credits may be carried forward to the next reporting period. Ethics and Harassment/Discrimination credits may not be carried forward to satisfy those specialty requirements. 

Record Retention: Attorneys should retain certificates of completion and supporting CLE documentation in accordance with Maine Board of Overseers of the Bar requirements.
