This continuing legal education (CLE) program examines: The Illinois CROWN Act and its impact on workplace policies governing employee appearance. Participants will explore recent updates to the Illinois Human Rights Act and analyze employer obligations concerning natural hairstyles, freedom of expression, and religious rights in the workplace. The program includes a practical checklist for drafting grooming and dress code policies to reduce legal risk and concludes with best practices for fostering cultural sensitivity, dignity, and respect in professional settings. This course will examine the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 – the Federal Employee Protection Act, case law involving this act and the limitations of Title VII and why there is a need for the Crown Act. This course will examine the duties, roles and responsibilities of counseling situations involving Illinois CROWN Act/Title VII and the American Disabilities Act (ADA). The Attorney will learn how the Crown Act affects employment discrimination law and elimination of bias. This course provides an intellectual foundation and introduces a set of learning skills essential for success in the legal profession and for life beyond. The course will provide opportunities for careful reading, for creative and critical thinking, for oral and written communication, and for engaging with others in a shared conversation about stimulating material.
