This continuing legal education (CLE) program examines the Illinois CROWN Act in K–12 and in higher education settings. Participants will explore how the Illinois CROWN Act impacts student and staff dress and grooming codes, disciplinary procedures, and legal compliance with state and federal civil rights requirements. This CLE program provides practical insights for education counsel, school administrators, and human rights officers on developing academic standards that include cultural sensitivity, freedom of expression, and religious rights. This course will examine the Federal Laws such as Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting education discrimination, case law and the limitations involving this act. Also discussed will be Title IX which protects against sex-based discrimination in any federally funded education program. Also discussed will be Illinois Public Act 102-0360 known as the Jett Hawkins Law. This course will examine the duties, roles and responsibilities of attorney counseling situations involving Illinois’ The CROWN Act/Title VI and the Jett Hawkins Act. The Attorney will learn how the Crown Act affects education discrimination law and elimination of bias. This course provides an intellectual foundation and introduces a set of learning skills essential for success in the legal profession and for life beyond. The course will provide opportunities for careful reading, for creative and critical thinking, for oral and written communication, and for engaging with others in a shared conversation about stimulating material.
